Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or small trees.

Stems: Internodes 2–10 cm long, pubescent, becoming glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades ovate to ovate–elliptic, (6–)8–9(–12) cm long, (2.5–)3.8–5.4(–6) cm wide. Apex distinctly acuminate or caudate, 1–2.5 cm long. Base subcordate. Surfaces glabrous or lower surfaces with scattered hairs along the midrib, petioles hirsute or with scattered hairs; pale green, membranous. Margins entire. Pinnately veined. Petioles 3–8 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in peduncles usually 10–15(–25) mm long, filiform, pilose, often curved, rachis globose to conical, slender, 2–6 mm long, hirsute, pedicels minute, pilose. Flowers bisexual (perfect), green, glabrous or with scattered hairs. Calyx tube 6–10 mm long, outer lobes 2.5–5 mm long, 1.5–3 mm wide, inner lobes 1.7–3 mm Iong, 1.5–2.8 mm wide. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 8, the lower whorl included, the upper whorl sometimes shortly exserted. Ovary superior, 1-celled; ovules solitary and pendulous.

Fruit: Fruit red; ellipsoid; ca. 15 mm long; ca. 8 mm in diameter; fruit drupaceous. Seeds without endosperm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Rare in wet and perhaps diverse mesic forest.
